1. From the Editor
First off, just a note to say that this will
be the last regular issue of the newsletter for
this year. I'll be away next week (doing the
Christmas travel thing to visit family), and the
week before New Years looks like it will be
hectic too.
(It doesn't help that everyone is too busy
this time of year to be interviewed either! ;-)
)
So the next issue of the newsletter will be
out on the 6th of January. I hope you won't miss
me too much :-)
Since Christmas is the season of giving, I've
added a few more items than I normally do to the
resources section of the newsletter for this
issue. I hope you enjoy them.
I know I mentioned this before, but 2003
really seems to have flown by. It was an
interesting year. On the business front, this
newsletter grew (then shrank by two thirds in
the move to Aweber). Some things I did were
successful, and some weren't.
The online scene was certainly interesting.
Jo Kumar burst onto the scene, and the blaze of
his arrival was matched only by his exit as his
reputation went up in flames.
Membership sites certainly took off this year
more than ever, and they don't seem to show any
sign of going away. Nor, in my humble opinion,
will they. Not for a few years anyway.
Not surprisingly, the spam problem got worse.
Triggering a new set of spam laws either coming
in already, or about to come in. Will they stop
the spam? Probably not, but we can hope!
On a personal note I was happy to meet so
many nice people online, mainly through this
newsletter. Some who I am now proud to call my
friends.
There was only really one major down point
during the year (for me) - the house break-in my
wife and I had back in June. Thankfully we
recovered fairly quickly from that incident, but
its not something I ever want to have happen
again.
Well, so much for what happened in 2003. I
don't know about you, but for the next couple of
weeks I'll be thinking seriously about what is
going to happen in 2004!
Anyway, while your mind starts thinking about
your future plans, I'll tell you about what's in
todays newsletter.
This weeks newsletter (rather appropriately
for the last one of the year) is a compilation
of some of the best tips from the last few
months. I've tried to arrange them into some
order, but as many of the interviews have been
on totally different topics, some of the tips
may seem a little disjointed.
I have three new resources for you this week.
The first is a new and revised copy of "Make
Your Net Auction Sell" (which used to sell for
$30).
The second resource is a short book of
interviews (which I contributed to) on turning
web visitors into subscribers.
The last resource is a 3 hour teleclass that
Marlon Sanders hosted recently (which is only
available for a limited time). More on all of
these below.
I hope you enjoy this weeks issue. And now,
on with the show!
2. Interview - Hints and tips
compilation
Sorry, this interview is no longer available in the archives. It has been moved to the membership site. You can find out more about the membership site (and how to join) by visiting here.
3. Survey Results
Last weeks interview with Larry Sullivan (on
building your sites link popularity) didn't get
as many votes as I was expecting. Only 9 people
cast their vote, with the interview receiving a
final rating of 4.33 out of 5.
As you would have seen in the last issue, I'm
also running a survey at the moment. Results
from that are still coming in, and I haven't
done a detailed analysis so far. However I will
share one preliminary result.
I asked people what items they would consider
important in a membership site, and would make
them more likely to join. The choices I offered
were:
- Discounts on products (not products with
resell rights)
- Web hosting
- Audio interviews
- Free teleclasses (with the recordings
also available)
- An archive of products with reprint
rights
Out of curiosity, I also offered the option
to vote if a particular item would make a person
LESS likely to join. I wasn't expecting anyone
to select that option, but I was surprised!
Several people indicated that if audio
interviews were part of the site, they would be
less likely to join. Out of the five options,
audio interviews were also the least liked
option (at least from the preliminary counting I
have done so far).
Not surprisingly, a reprint rights section
was very highly desired. This was followed a
little way behind by the discount section and
the teleclasses (which were pretty much tied).
Web hosting fell even further behind, and as I
mentioned before the audio interviews were of
least interest.
I expect I'll be looking at these results
quite closely over the Christmas period!
4. Resources - A Grab Bag of
Christmas Presents!
There are three new resources this week.
After all, its Christmas - what better time to
give away new items :-)
The first resource is a copy of the book
"Make Your Net Auction Sell". This used to be
sold by SiteSell (Ken Evoy's company) for $30,
but they have decided to revise it (so its
totally up to date) and give it away.
Why? Presumably so they can use it to promote
their Site Build It package.
If you're interested in selling items via
online auction (eBay being the best known site)
you should read this book. Its in PDF format, so
anyone should be able to read it.
The second resource is a short book of
interviews. The interviews are all with
publishers (including me). The questions revolve
around how the publishers go about attracting
people to their list, and how they then build a
profitable relationship with them.
Its a short read, but interesting.
Unfortunately this book is PC only.
The last resource is a 3 hour teleclass that
Marlon Sanders hosted recently. Until Boxing Day
Marlon is allowing everyone the chance to listen
to the call free of charge (streaming audio only
unfortunately). If you want a copy that you can
listen to away from your computer, he is also
selling CDs of the call.
Links to all of these items have been added
to the "members only" section, along with the
existing collection of ebooks, ecourses, and
other useful sites.

5. Final Word
There isn't really much for me to say in the
farewell this week. I hope these last few days
for you up till Christmas don't prove to be too
taxing. And whether you celebrate Christmas or
not, I hope the holidays are refreshing and
enjoyable for you and your family.
Take care over the Christmas period, and I
look forward to seeing you in 2004!
